Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have a minimum of one year of experience in environmental education programs; or one year of college study with specialization in natural sciences, natural resources, or environmental education.
Duties Description The Environmental Education Assistant will primarily support the DEC summer residential camp program for children aged 11 to 17. This is expected to be a year-round, hourly position.
Duties will include:
1) Compiling data and monitoring reports, including weekly reports from directors, accident and incident reports, camper and staff surveys, mandated training and seasonal reports.
2) Assisting with registering free campers, entering data, corresponding with parents and sponsors, and filing documents.
3) Assisting with providing camper parent/guardian and sponsor customer service through phone and email.
4) Assisting with camp staff recruiting and training: scheduling interviews, reserving rooms and processing hiring and employment paperwork.
5) Assisting with monitoring four residential camps during the summer.
6) Hosting information tables to promote camps and DEC programs at events, colleges and festivals.
7) Assisting Bureau of Environmental Education staff with programs and services, such as writing articles, participating on natural resource committees and supporting education programs, educator workshops (Projects WILD, WET and Learning Tree) and the Capital District Campership program.
8) Working with community-based organizations and local schools in Environmental Justice areas to recruit and select urban children to participate in outdoor recreation and education programs in preparation for spending one week at a DEC camp.
9) Other duties will include assisting with Bureau of Environmental Education staff office functions, such as clerical duties and monitoring bureau budgets and work plans.
Experience with DEC summer residential camp program is preferred.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Travel and working early morning, evenings and weekends will be required. Some overnight travel will be required. Weekends and holidays may be required.
This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with a duration through 3/31/2022. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date, which may be prior to date listed. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at interview.
