Minimum Qualifications G25 - Bachelor's degree in a Natural Science and four years of professional post-degree research experience in the appropriate field; or a Master's Degree and three years of such experience; or a doctorate in the appropriate field and one year of such experience.

Preferred Qualifications: American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) Board
Eligible/Certified; PhD in biochemical genetics, analytical chemistry, clinical chemistry, experience in newborn screening.
Duties Description The Department of Health's Newborn Screening Program is seeking a Research Scientist to supervise the Newborn Screening Program's Inherited Metabolic Disorders (IMD) laboratory group. This group includes the determination of amino acid, organic acid, and fatty acid oxidation disorders by tandem mass spectrometry. The IMD group reports approximately 38 of the over 50 disorders screened by the program for approximately 1,000 samples each day. Duties include: (1) Develop and test new methods and report accuracy: Review and evaluate the current literature for methods and algorithms to improve screening; Evaluate results for factors to improve screening sensitivity/specificity; Evaluate available results for additional ratios or algorithms that may improve sensitivity; Test the accuracy of reporting from in?house laboratory information systems. (2) Supervise and maintain regulatory compliance of the lab: Write, review, and edit standard operating procedures; Supervise and evaluate lab staff; Maintain training files for lab staff; Maintain and review documentation in the lab; Devise and implement methods for completing all analyses in a timely and efficient manner. (3) Supervise Lab Activities: Maintain schedule for the lab; Maintain adequate inventory of supplies for day-to-day operation; Maintain instrument operations and document, review, and approve maintenance and repairs; Review results for accuracy and compliance; Release results for reporting to care providers. (4) Publish and present results, apply for grant funding: Publish original research findings in peer reviewed journals; Participate in grant development and writing; Participate in national newborn screening efforts/committees.
Additional Comments Contingent-permanent, full-time, non-competitive appointment. Routine travel, including occasional overnight travel and travel to areas which may not be served by public transportation, is required. (~10%)
