Minimum Qualifications PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Ten or more years of professional experience in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or similar area.
• Exceptional writing, speaking and organizational skills a must.

Duties Description We are looking for an experienced and creative press secretary to join our team. As an Assistant Director Public Information (Press Secretary), you will be responsible for overseeing and implementing communications, government affairs, community event planning, social media, and digital and media relations strategies. An ideal candidate has at least 10 years of experience in government communications, public relations, journalism, community event planning, public affairs, or related field.

CORE FUNCTIONS
• Develop, execute, and evaluate a broad range of short- and long-term strategies for the State Comptroller’s office.
• Provide ongoing, high-level strategic communications and community event planning counsel to the State Comptroller, senior management, and operational divisions.
• Manage administrative functions, including supervising staff and helping to oversee day-to-day operations. Prior experience managing staff desired.
• Strong writing and editing skills are a requirement.
GENERAL OPERATIONS AND ACTIVITIES
• Work with communications team, senior leadership, and State Comptroller to determine communications needs, develop communications strategies, write materials, and proactively implement communications projects.
• Develop media and community outreach strategies to make stronger connections with key NYC stakeholders on the work of the State Comptroller.
• Engage independently on sensitive, complex issues and offer recommendations on policy positions and messaging for major issues and programs.
• Serve as a media spokesperson on policy, financial, political, operations and audits.
• Obtain and verify accuracy of information in all media outreach and communications, utilizing all available data and securing approval from subject matter experts and senior managers.
• Develop and implement messaging for Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other social media platforms in conjunction with social media director.
• Must have strong writing skills to edit materials of other staff and write communications materials, including press releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, media statements, social media posts, web content, letters, publications, video scripts and other materials for distribution to the press, public and key stakeholders.
• Supervise, arrange, and coordinate public and community events, such as press conferences, media availability, speeches, interviews and other public or virtual events.
• Operate in a way which fosters a commitment to excellence and teamwork. Maintain an overall environment within the department, which is positive and results oriented.
• Some travel required.
