Minimum Qualifications For Provisional Appointment:
Transfer under Section 70.1 of Civil Service Law which requires one year of permanent, competitive status as an Environmental Educator 1. OR

Eligibility for appointment under Section 55b/55c program through the Department of Civil Service OR

*Provisional Appointment- Either 1. four years of experience in environmental conservation in a professional/technical capacity or professional teaching of environmental education (see definition below);

Or 2. two years of the experience described above AND 60 college semester credit hours, including at least 24 college semester credit hours in biology (for the purpose of these examinations, courses that focus on the study of domesticated or farm animals or humans are not qualifying), earth science, ecology, environmental education, environmental science, field natural history, forestry, geology, marine science, natural resources interpretation, or soil science. You MUST submit a list of qualifying courses with your application, including course title, number of semester credits per course, name of college or university, and the date (or expected date) of completion. Applications submitted without a list of courses or transcript will be disapproved;

Or 3. a bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences, environmental education, environmental science, forestry, or natural resources interpretation AND you must also have one year of additional experience in environmental education.

“Environmental education” is defined as teaching about or interpreting the natural world, the principles of ecology, natural resources management, and environmental quality management. It deals with the interrelationships of plants, animals, and the non-living environment and emphasizes human interactions with these components.
Examples of Acceptable Qualifying Experience: Experience as a naturalist at a nature setting; an instructor in an environmental education program; or as a designer of environmental education programs for youth organizations such as scouting groups, 4 H clubs, YMCA, etc.

* An individual appointed provisionally must take and pass a Civil Service examination for this position and be reachable; i.e. be one of the top three (3) candidates on the resulting eligible list willing to accept the position.

Duties Description This position serves as the supervisor of the Environmental Education and Event planning teams for Grafton Lakes / Cherry Plain State Park. The incumbent reports to the Park Manager and serves as a key member of the Grafton and Cherry Plain State Parks team. Primary responsibilities include:

• Assists with overseeing the operation of the Grafton Lakes State Park Welcome Center including budgeting and administration, staffing, programming, and events.

• Collaborates with park staff to maintain quality public service for visitors to the Welcome Center, including orientation, well-maintained exhibit and activity areas, and tidy facilities.

• Oversees live animal maintenance and daily care, special permits for live animals, exhibit displays and wildlife collections as well as any nuisance wildlife permits.

• Develops, conducts, publicizes, and evaluates environmental education courses and programs by preparing lesson plans; developing teaching aids and exhibits, conducting courses, evaluating the effectiveness of programs, and revising and modifying courses in response to program needs, changes, deficiencies, and the needs of particular groups. This position will also focus on introducing teachers to the Connect Kids Grant program and assisting with the application process to get them out into the parks in an affordable way.

• Assists with budgeting for both NYS allocations and disbursements from the Natural Heritage Trust to efficiently deliver education and exhibit upgrades as needed.

• Manages digital and print media to advance public outreach.

• Supervises and evaluates program staff at the Grafton Welcome Center, and oversees the recruitment, training, mentoring, and supervision of SCA interns and volunteers.

• Responsible for community engagement including trail user groups, Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park, Rensselaer Youth Outdoors, the local community, and other groups that affiliate with the park. This includes attending meetings regularly and collaborating to enhance user group experiences.

• Develops, manages, and implements interpretive signs and exhibits for Grafton and Cherry Plain State Park,

• As part of the parks supervisor team, oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of our multiple large events including but not limited to Winter Festival, Ice Fishing Tournament, I love My Park Day, Run for the Roses, Bark and Brew and Trick or Treat nature trail. This includes any permitting for vendors, exhibitors, presenters, and interest groups.

• Works with the Natural Resources Stewardship team to contribute to the public education of Natural Resource Stewardship issues and management in the park, including the incorporation of NRS projects in volunteer recruitment and educational programming.
