Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list in order to be considered for permanent appointment to the position.
The minimum requirements for taking the examination are:
You must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Transportation and have had three months of permanent non-competitive service as a Bridge Repair Mechanic, Trades Specialist (Bridge), or Bridge Repair Assistant.
Only the title or titles listed are qualifying.
After one year of the service described in the Minimum Qualifications, successful candidates will be qualified for appointment from the eligible list.
Either 1. three years of experience in the construction, reconstruction, maintenance, rehabilitation, or inspection of bridges, highways, roadways, or waterways;*
Or 2. an associate’s or higher degree in construction or engineering technology AND one year of the experience as described above;*
Or 3. a diploma or certificate of completion in carpentry, masonry, welding, or construction from a post-secondary trade school, apprenticeship program, or military construction specialty school** AND one year of the experience described above.*
*Experience in construction of sewers, parking lots, and buildings will NOT be considered qualifying experience.
**NOTE: Acceptable military training may include documented completion of United States Army 14-Week Corp of Engineers “Field 12”, United States Navy Construction Force “A” and United States Navy Construction Force “C” schools “Navy Seabees”, United States Marine Corps Combat Engineers “MOS1371” school, or United States Air Force Civil Engineer Force “Prime BEEF” or “RED HORSE” training. Training schools must accompany one follow-on duty station in said field.
Important: High school BOCES or VO-TECH courses are NOT qualifying.
Candidates must possess a valid New York State Class A or Class B Commercial’s Driver’s License with no air brake restriction, at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter.
Appointees will be required to satisfactorily complete a “one-person plowing” certification program which the Department of Transportation will offer during the probationary period.
Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title and assignment. Cannabis use will be tested for during the pre-employment screening process and may be the basis for disqualification for employment or may be a basis for removal from employment.
Duties Description Assists a Bridge Repair Supervisor 2 in supervising a bridge repair crew by inspecting and reviewing the work performed by sub-crews. Duties include but are not limited to:
Checks work being performed by each sub-crew daily to insure instructions, work standards and safety procedures are followed;
Makes on-the-spot determinations of the need for any additional repair and maintenance work due to unforeseen problems;
Arranges for additional material and equipment to complete work;
Reviews and inspects completed projects to insure work was performed properly;
Confers with crew supervisor concerning unexpected problems;
May prepare written daily activity reports for each sub-crew stating manpower, material and equipment used for each project and any unexpected development or delay;
Acts as overall supervisor in the absence of the Bridge Repair Supervisor 2;
Supervises a sub-crew in the performance of larger and more complex bridge repair projects;
Receives explanations as to the extent of repair and maintenance work required for specific projects and any plans and instructions on how to perform work;
Secures required material, equipment and manpower from Bridge Repair Crew and/or Residencies;
Oversees, directs and works with crew in performance of repair work to insure instructions, plans, work standards and safety procedures are followed;
Determines if additional unscheduled repair work is necessary and arranges for any additional material and equipment necessary to perform the work;
Prepares a written daily work activity report for repair project with manpower, equipment and material used and explanation of any difficulties or delays encountered;
Snow removal/ice control activities- The candidate would operate light trucks and may operate heavy dump trucks, perform one-person plowing and operate other pieces of highway equipment such as a tow plow;
Candidate will also be required to answer emergency calls outside of regular hours of work;
Overtime response and shift work are requirements for this job; therefore, use of vacation and personal leaves are limited during the winter but may be approved during the summer.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations. Candidates will be required to be included in the department’s written respiratory protection program.
