Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must possess a certification by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID); OR a passing score on the written portion of the RID certification examination AND two years of experience providing sign language interpretive services; OR a rating of intermediate or above on the Sign Communication Proficiency Interview conducted by the national Technical Institute for the Deaf.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates who have experience with understanding and interpreting K-12 subject matter, experience working with special needs students, particularly deaf or hard of hearing, and cultural knowledge of the Deaf Community and its resources.


Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates to fill a Translator (Manual Communications) position at the New York State School for the Deaf. The incumbent of this position will be responsible for coordinating sign language interpreting services for individuals who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and translating, communicating, and interpreting from a verbal spoken language (i.e., English into American Sign Language (ASL) and from ASL into a verbal spoken language). Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Interpret all communication, spoken and signed between Deaf/hard of hearing students, Deaf staff, and hearing staff by using manual communication appropriate for learning level of student;
• Interpret administrative meetings, student and parent conferences, educational mainstreaming, in-services, IEP meetings, guest lectures, field trips, and formal ceremonies, as needed;
• Interpret, edit, and proofread rules, regulations, and policy brochures and manuals for use by staff, students, and health care providers;
• Interpret correspondence, letters, notes, and conversations between staff, students, and families;
• Provide interpreting services related to student progress for IEP’s and evaluation tools;
• Utilize interpreting skills to assist people filling out applications, forms, and other documents;
• Interpret details of treatment, educational staff instructions for treatment planning, medication administration, and education to students, families, and caregivers, which may include translating and interpreting complex and confidential medical and mental health information;
• Use standard practices and ethical decision making in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct;
• Communicate, interact, and work effectively and cooperatively with individuals from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds;
• Interpret independently or with a team of other interpreters as appropriate and;
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: This will be a permanent 12-month, non-competitive appointment. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Verification of Verification of RID certification and/or Sign Communication Proficiency Interview rating will be required for all candidates at the time of interview. The work schedule for this position includes the hours of Monday - Friday 8:00am–4:00pm.

*Leads to a maximum salary of $64,693 with annual performance advances.
