Minimum Qualifications Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the NYS CSEA Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services. Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license is preferred, but not required, for this position.
*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
Based on federal and/or state regulations, this position requires vaccination against COVID-19. Upon appointment, the selected candidate must be fully vaccinated, or willing to become fully vaccinated, against COVID-19 and will be required to provide proof of vaccination. Candidates who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at the time of interview may not start working until two weeks after their final dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Duties Description The Office of Mental Health (OMH) is recruiting to fill a Maintenance Assistant position. This is a temporary/hourly position in the Bureau of Environmental Design and Improvement located in the New York City area. Specific duties to be performed may include, but are not limited to the following:
Perform ongoing maintenance, small repair and environmental improvement projects.
Perform semi-skilled carpentry duties, including the installation and maintenance of walls, ceilings, cabinets, doors, windows, flooring and insulation.
Conduct skilled surface preparation and application of primer and finish coats of paint in areas designated in the scope of work.
Perform housekeeping tasks and heavy cleaning, general grounds keeping, landscaping, building maintenance, and painting as needed.
Maintain grounds by mowing grass, sweeping, raking, shoveling, and removing debris, branches, snow, ice, trash, etc. by hand.
Possess a working knowledge of maintenance and repair methods, materials and tools.
Perform manual tasks such as lifting and placing equipment and tools.
Additional Comments This position is part of the New York City Revite team that travels between facilities in the New York City area performing special project renovations, ongoing maintenance, small repair and environmental improvement projects. The regional revitalization team concept was first adopted for the New York City region in 1984-85, and soon expanded to five regions that cover the entire state. The Environmental Revitalization Teams are made up of temporary Trades Generalist, Maintenance Assistant, and Facility Operations Assistant 1 positions that perform ongoing maintenance and small renovation projects to augment facility support staff services. The teams operate on an ongoing basis, making visits at each OMH facility in the region twice each year.
Candidates are not eligible for reimbursement of travel costs.
