Minimum Qualifications Minimum qualifications for taking the open-competitive examination: must have one of the following appropriate certificates/licenses issued by the New York State Education Department:
? Level 3 Teaching Assistant Certificate.
? Pre-professional Teaching Assistant Certificate.
? Continuing Certificate as a Teaching Assistant.
? Provisional, Initial, Permanent, or Professional Teacher
Certificate.
Requirements for Continued Employment: Possession of a Level 3 Teaching Assistant Certificate, Pre-Professional Teaching Assistant Certificate, Continuing Certificate as a Teaching Assistant, or Provisional, Initial, Permanent, or Professional Teacher Certificate issued by the New York State Education Department is necessary for continued employment. Loss of certification will result in termination of employment.
Duties Description Teaching Assistants provide direct instructive services in a formal education program within the framework of specific instructions from a fully qualified teacher or instructor. Incumbents assist professional staff by perofrming a variety of educational tasks which do not require mastery of the subject matter, or the skill level required of a fully qualified teacher or instructor. Teaching Assistants work with diverse groups of students that have broad ranges of social and acedmic backgrounds, interests, physical and/or developmental disabilites, and/or mental illness.
