Duties Description Primary Purpose

The Senior Systems Specialist performs a wide variety of operational, developmental, and administrative tasks relating to the maintenance of PC systems, server-based systems, network, telecommunications, hardware, and software.  Designs and develops IT applications that provides solutions to business problems in alignment with the enterprise architecture direction and standards.

Essential Functions

      Field Support/Hardware

Manage/coordinate the deployment, installation, and maintenance of DASNY's personal computers, PC-WAN and PC-LAN systems and peripherals.
Facilitate reliable operation of system and application software by monitoring and evaluating system usage and keeping desktop systems tuned for optimum performance.
Ensure a standard desktop installation of both hardware and software by utilizing current technology such as automated software deployment, ghosting and imaging.
Provide technical assistance to users and IS staff, including proper choice/use of PC software, printers and plotters, file transfer between applications, connection to hosts and uploading and downloading information.
Analyze trends in PC hardware and software. Maintain current knowledge of new developments, pricing, and sources.
Complete usage trials of new hardware and software prior to DASNY-wide distribution.


     Technical Support

Responsible for the planning, deployment, installation, and maintenance of all servers based hardware, operating system and software additions, migrations and upgrades.
Provide for server equipment security and maintenance; operation and maintenance of disk systems; document system usage, problem areas, directory structure and subsystems performance.
Facilitate reliable operation of system and application software by monitoring and evaluating system usage and keeping desktop systems and servers updated with current antivirus and tuned for optimum performance. Apply vendor issued updates and patches as applicable.
Assist in coordinating and providing technical assistance for the installation of hardware and software enhancements.
Maintain the health and security of the TCP/IP based LAN/WAN networks and their related components.
Plan, install and maintain all hardware/software components relating to the network environment.
Use in-depth network administration hardware and software tools to monitor the network environment.
Manage system administration and operation tasks relating to the Authority's UNIX and Windows servers.
Provide integration services; determine and solve problems of incompatibility among computer and telecommunications hardware/software acquired from different vendors.
Provide and maintain a consistent environment for the thorough and complete backup of all DASNY systems according to established policies and assist in maintaining a disaster recovery environment.
Perform security administration functions regarding user accounts and passwords and the associated procedures for reviewing, logging, and implementing access rights for files, databases and physical devices.
Perform routine and special request backups and restores of all host computer systems and network servers, including OS/400, Microsoft Windows, and AIX/UNIX/Linux operating systems. Backups and restores may be performed on various media forms.
Handle, catalog, and track backup media / tapes.
Maintain backup media / tape log library database.
Maintain, operate, and document media storage systems, including physical and virtual media systems and tape libraries.
Create and execute batch utilities to automate operational tasks.
Create and maintain documentation for backup procedures and retention periods.
Install, configure, test, and maintain network application software packages as designated by the supervisor.
Provide user support for assigned applications and systems.
Perform monthly system maintenance tasks as assigned.
Assist with integration of client/network application software and standard desktop policies and procedures.
      IS Training & Video Conference Support

Research, analyze, test, and evaluate new video and conference software systems; develop and prepare recommendations.
Design technical course material and communicate to assist end users adapt new technologies / optimize existing IT tools and applications with training supporting non-technical to advance technical users.
Research and analyze capabilities of web-based learning platforms and modern educational techniques; prepare recommendations for consideration.
Communicate and understand end user workflows.
Develop and deliver training for new users and provide ongoing assistance and support as needed.
Design curriculum and record training videos in concert with Subject Matter Expert (SMEs)
Distribute training and monitor compliance using DASNY’s Learning Management System (LMS) a.k.a. Cornerstone
Test and evaluate new technology
Provide onsite video conferencing support to end users and Executive Management.
Perform troubleshooting of video issues during executive and non-executive meetings.
Support meetings across multiple locations; ensure support is provided to internal DASNY staff and external parties.
