Minimum Qualifications Certification from the Department of Health in the grade required for operation of the water treatment plant to which assigned. Appointees may be employed pending certification. *This certification may be gained during the probationary period. Candidate must be removed if they fail to achieve certification.
Duties Description Under the direction of the Regional Maintenance Supervisor and Senior Filter Plant operator, the incumbent operates and is responsible for water distribution systems and filter plants. Duties include:
• Monitors and adjusts control panels, gauges, chlorinators, filters and other equipment.
• Takes samples of water, performs tests and records test results.
• Adds chemicals and adjusts water treatments to meet quality standards.
• Cleans, repairs, flushes, calibrates and maintains pumps, filters, screens, valves, meters, other equipment and systems.
• Orders supplies, chemicals, maintenance parts and equipment.
• May instruct and supervise other workers in operating and maintaining plants and equipment.
• Prepares and maintains records related to work activities, inventory, and monitoring and testing.
• Prepares and submits reports about testing and maintenance.
• May be assigned to operate other facility systems and perform semi-skilled maintenance activities.
• The incumbent will also work with facilities throughout the Region and the Western District Capital unit to ensure that each facility is following the State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) Permit Program.
Additional Comments OPERATING NEEDS:
• *Must possess and maintain a Class C Public Water System Operator certification as a term and condition of employment.
• Must possess and maintain a valid NYS driver’s license as a term and condition of employment.
• Must possess basic computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Must be able to use basic hand/power tools and semi-skilled in plumbing maintenance and repair.
• Must be familiar with State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) Permit Program.
