Minimum Qualifications To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
Candidates must possess a valid New York State Class B Commercial Driver’s License with no air brake restriction and a New York State Heavy Motor Vehicle Inspection License, at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter.
If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list in order to be considered for permanent appointment to the position.
The minimum qualifications for taking the examination are: You must be a qualified employee of New York state and have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Motor Equipment Mechanic (Service & Repair Mechanic Motor Equipment) or Construction Equipment Mechanic.
In order to be eligible for a provisional appointment candidates must have one year of service described in the Minimum Qualifications for taking the examination.
Duties Description The typical job duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Assigns staff to repair jobs based on employee's skill levels, maintenance and repair schedules, work priorities, and indicates the nature of repair and Preventative Maintenance work to be performed.
• Observes the work performed by team members, approves completed job to ensure that schedules are met and the quality of work is satisfactory.
• Trains staff in proper safety procedures and enforces safety rules.
• Assures written records of work performed are accurate and accounts for labor and materials used by his team.
• Prepares probationary and evaluation reports.
• Monitors time and attendance including scheduling of vacations to ensure adequate staff is available and with assistance from the Maintenance Supervisor 2 Motor Equipment (MS2ME), counsels employees, as required.
• Complete and maintain a "Tum-Over Folder" for this position.
In addition, when assigned to field locations, MS1ME's are also responsible for the following:
• Assures residency mechanics are available for emergency operations including setting up temporary shifting on a 24-hour 7 day a week schedule.
• Meets regularly with residency work location coordinator to determine customer needs by priority, coordinate Preventative Maintenance schedule and fleet requirements for the upcoming planning period.
• Manages the parts inventory to ensure adequate stock levels of repair parts.
• Coordinates with the MS2ME or MS3ME to schedule repairs into regional shop and commercial facilities and schedules overtime repairs as needed at the residency.
• As required, performs the activities and tasks listed in the Classification Standard for Service and Repair Mechanic Motor Equipment.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
Additional Comments “Cannabis use is not permitted for employees in this title and assignment. Cannabis use will be tested for during the pre-employment screening process and may be the basis for disqualification for employment or may be a basis for removal from employment.”
*Telecommuting: The Department’s current telecommuting agreement is valid through December 31, 2022 and is subject to extension beyond that date.
