Minimum Qualifications Candidates must possess a NYS Professional Engineer License and current registration. In order to be eligible to be considered for appointment, candidates must be reachable from the Civil Service List for this position or be eligible for transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.
Duties Description As Professional Engineer 1 (Civil/Transportation) in the Regional Design Group, the selected candidate will perform assigned functional duties under the direction of a Professional Engineer 2 and those duties include but are not limited to:
Design Team Leader duties include: supervising and leading a highway or bridge design team throughout all stages of the project development process; coordinating project activities and communicating effectively with Regional and Main Office functional units, local officials and the public; monitoring project progress with respect to cost, scope, schedule and quality; performing various types of structural, highway or hydraulic calculations; providing technical design data for the production of Design Approval Documents, Advance Detail Plans and Proposal Specifications and Estimate (PS&E) packages; providing technical construction support; supervising, training and mentoring design personnel; and providing technical assistance as needed.
Bridge Inspection Team Leader duties include: inspecting, preparing and submitting inspection reports for approximately 150 state and locally owned bridges annually; determining when flag conditions exist, providing prompt notifications and preparing flag reports; coordinating inspection work with Work Zone Traffic Control contractors, bridge inspection consultants, and Regional functional groups; updating load rating, vulnerability and inventory data; and assisting with other Bridge Safety Assurance duties, as necessary.
Hydraulic Engineer duties include: performing hydraulic evaluations of bridges and large culverts for capital and maintenance work; reviewing drainage systems for highway work permit applications; supervising the large culvert inspection team; coordinating the bridge inspection diving program with MO Structures; coordinating large culvert inspection program and perform quality control on reports and safety flags; maintaining BSA
hydraulic and post flood databases, along with coordination of post flood inspections; assisting RSME with special analysis and other tasks, as needed.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
Additional Comments *Telecommuting: The Department’s current telecommuting agreement is valid through December 31, 2022 and is subject to extension beyond that date.
