Duties Description This position will assist in the coordination and implementation of the statewide management programs for white-tailed deer, black bear, and moose, in collaboration with Regional biologists and under the guidance of the Big Game Program Leader or Game Management Section Head, within the Bureau of Wildlife’s Game Management Section in Albany. Duties of the position include: develop, review, and assess management plans and actions for big game species in New York; contribute to population monitoring and assessment efforts, including collection of biological data, development, implementation, and analysis of surveys, and writing technical reports; coordinate the annual Deer Management Permit quota setting and issuance process; maintain technical knowledge related to big game species ecology and management; respond to information requests from the public and news media via phone and email, and write popular articles, web content, press releases, and newsletters and social media posts related to ecology and management of big game species in New York; present oral reports of big game management activities within the Bureau of Wildlife and at public and professional meetings; contribute to development of federal aid work plans, annual reports, and other mandatory annual reporting; provide technical guidance to individuals, organizations, and communities on ways to prevent and alleviate conflicts with deer and bear; assist in the development and review of social and biological research involving big game species in New York, and serve as a liaison with university and research partners on research projects; assist in the development, review and communication of regulations and policies related to big game management; participate in the Bureau of Wildlife’s statewide Big Game Management team, including working with other Team members to annually review accomplishments and identify priorities for the coming year; as requested by the Big Game Program Leader, represent NYSDEC on Regional technical committees for deer and black bear; supervise Fish & Wildlife Technicians or other support staff who assist with data collection and management; and contribute to the work of the Game Management Section and implementation of programs for other game species as needed.

Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 40 pounds.
