Minimum Qualifications Legal Assistant 1: Reachable for appointment on current Civil Service eligible list used for this title; or one year of permanent competitive class service as a Legal Assistant 1; or one year of permanent competitive-class service in a title eligible for transfer under section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. Eligible titles include: Program, Aide, Office Assistant 3, Administrative Assistant 2. Please note: candidates must also possess an associate’s degree or higher in a paralegal/legal assistance program OR a certificate in a paralegal/legal assistant program where either the degree or certificate was granted from a regionally accredited college or university, or college or university accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) or one approved by the American Bar Association (ABA).
Legal Assistant Trainee 1: Reachable for appointment on current Civil Service eligible list used for this title; or one year of permanent competitive-class service in a title eligible for transfer under section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. Eligible titles include: Assistant Insurance Fund Services Representative, Office Assistant 2, Administrative Assistant 1. Please note: this is a two-year traineeship leading to the journey level title of Legal Assistant 1, SG-14. During the two-year traineeship, trainees are required to successfully complete six courses in paralegal studies and related skills from an accredited college and one or more courses in writing skills.
Duties Description The requested individual would be responsible for assisting us with Loss Transfer reimbursement recovery efforts including investigating cases, evaluating whether or not the cases meet the necessary legal criteria, drafting the arbitration contentions, filing the arbitration claim and participating in the arbitration hearings when necessary. They would also be responsible for monitoring recoveries and drafting any necessary motions to confirm awards or enforce judgments related to these recoveries.
The requested individual would also spend roughly equal time assisting with premium collections. The tasks related to premium collections would include reviewing and triaging premium collection cases, locating debtors; drafting initial dunning letters and subsequent correspondence with debtors; verifying assets; contacting policyholders to arrange audits or repayment plans; preparing draft pleadings, motion papers and affidavits for attorney review; electronically filing and tracking court documents; preparing calendar and diary entries; photocopying and scanning documents for litigation and mailing; and coordinating and communicating with numerous district offices regarding records for audit and affidavits needed for court.
