Minimum Qualifications Must have two years of full-time, verifiable experience in custodial, grounds, or maintenance operations or assisting in a journey-level trade. When required to operate motor vehicles, incumbents must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated.
Preferred qualifications:
Experience in backcountry trail work, preferably sustainable trail building techniques and trail hardening experience.
Proficiency with Garmin GPS systems.
Experience maintaining and repairing trail building specific tools.
Duties Description This position will work individually or with a partner in the High Peaks Wilderness. Projects will include work on the Cascade Trail, Trail Tool Maintenance and Repair, Signage Projects, inventorying and prepping trail projects for the 2023 season: working on repairing and relocating privies, moving materials to future project sites, side cutting, drainage work, sign inventory, and replacement and clearing blowdown. Other work will include inventorying and photographing campsites, signs and trails, including entering data into a spreadsheet.
Each week the individual will work on tasks that could be roadside, indoors, or could occasionally be in the backcountry for the entire week, camping or staying at one of DEC’s Interior Outposts. Most of the projects are located 6 miles from the nearest road and will require a strenuous hike with heavy pack to get to each week. Will work with and maintain survey quality notebook, GPS, hand tools, grip hoists and other tools to complete projects. There will be work entering notes into a spreadsheet and recording information electronically. Will work under the supervision of Forester 1 but may work alone or as part of the group during the day.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 3/31/2023. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
