Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and three years of relevant experience.*
*Substitutions: Four years of specialized experience or associate’s degree and two years of specialized experience may substitute for bachelor’s degree; J.D. or master’s degree may substitute for one year of specialized experience; Ph.D. may substitute for two years of specialized experience.
Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have 10 years’ experience conducting investigations, including in criminal defense matters; an understanding of issues bearing on criminal justice, social justice, racial justice, and wrongful convictions; and a commitment to improving the quality of criminal defense representation in New York State.
Duties Description The New York State Office of Indigent Legal Services seeks an experienced investigator to support the efforts of a new Statewide Appellate Support Center team located at our office in Albany, New York. The Investigator will undertake a variety of efforts designed to help criminal defense attorneys and investigators to conduct effective investigations at the pretrial, trial, sentencing, and post-conviction stage. This will include gathering and maintaining comprehensive, up-to-date, and easily accessible information regarding investigators and investigative tools and resources available on a local, state, and national level. The Investigator will also conduct trainings regarding how criminal defense attorneys can effectively hire, use, and instruct both in-house and contract investigators, as well as how investigators can conduct effective investigations, productively communicate with defenders, and become valuable members of a defense team. In addition, the Investigator will be available to consult with attorneys and local investigators seeking information and ideas about how to approach investigations in individual cases.
