Preferred Qualifications: familiarity with hunting and/or trapping, recreational shooting sports, environmental education, game management.
Duties Description The incumbent in this position will develop, plan, administer, and implement aspects of the hunting education, access, promotion, and recruitment programs. They will play a lead role in planning and implementation for Division initiatives for these programs and engage in regular communication with agency staff and partners, licensed hunters and trappers, program participants, landowners, and other stakeholders. The position also involves developing and reviewing work plans and associated grants and contracts supporting the work and compiling and analyzing data to evaluate the effectiveness of these programs.
Responsibilities for this position include:
• Assist the Hunter Education Program Administrator with work planning, implementation, and evaluation of hunter, bowhunter, and trapper safety certification programs.
• Develop and implement a plan to enhance archery and shooting access including performing field work to collect information or implement plan objectives, developing publicly accessible archery ranges, and securing and managing grants related to this work.
• Coordinate the delivery of the New York State National Archery in the Schools Program, including assigning work among DEC Regional, volunteer, and/or contract staff.
• Develop and review work plans and activities for recruitment, retention, and reactivation (R3) of hunters, trappers, and other wildlife-related recreationists including:
o Coordinate and manage a grant related to enhancing hunter access to private lands including reviewing plans and grant documents for completeness, verifying that field activities are conducted in accordance with applicable terms and conditions, collecting and soliciting data needed for evaluating this program, and preparing annual reports.
o Participate in outreach projects and presentations involving partners, stakeholders, and local schools and universities.
o Compile, summarize, and analyze hunter and trapper education, licensing, and participation data to evaluate the effectiveness of R3 programs.
• Supervise permanent and hourly program staff.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Travel may be required. Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 40 pounds.
