Minimum Qualifications *Although this position will report to Main Office, this position will be covering areas North, South, East and West to include Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Watertown, Albany and Poughkeepsie.

To be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law and have had three months of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as:

Either A. an Intermodal Transportation Specialist 1 (Motor Carrier Safety);

Or B. an Intermodal Transportation Specialist 1, Intermodal Transportation Specialist 1 (Bus System Safety), or Intermodal Transportation Specialist 1 (Rail Safety).

Duties Description Routine duties will require extensive travel, including, but not limited to:

• Manage a unit by supervising the collection, analysis, and interpretation of safety related data, establishing annual work plans, assigning staff t projects and reviewing and approving staff work.
• Develop and conduct training programs for departmental inspectors and investigators and motor carrier operations staff.
• Develop and revise program guidelines, forms, and manuals for motor carrier safety investigation, oversight and inspection program.
• Lead teams conducting safety compliance reviews, accident investigations and operator audits.
• Provide technical oversight and assistance to regional program staff.
• Review and approve reports and analysis prepared by staff and prepare written reports and supporting documentation for use by NYSDOT and other federal, state and local agencies.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Additional Comments *Telecommuting: The Department’s current telecommuting agreement is valid through January 31st, 2023 and is subject to extension beyond that date.
