Minimum Qualifications In order to be considered for permanent appointment, candidates must be reachable on the current Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer in accordance with Civil Service Law.

If a viable eligible list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list in order to be considered for permanent appointment to the
position.

Engineering Technician Trainee, NS=Grade 8:

1. One year of experience assisting in engineering, engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, electronics, electronics technology, landscape design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying; and graduation from high school or possession of an equivalent diploma; or

2. 18 semester college credit hours in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental
technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics;

3. Graduation from a high school technical education program in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics or electronics.

Note: Upon successful completion of the 52-week traineeship candidates will be automatically advanced to the Senior Engineering Technician, SG-13.

Senior Engineering Technician, Grade 13:

1. Two years of experience assisting in engineering, engineering technology, engineering management technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, electronics, electronics technology, landscape design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying; and graduation from high school or possession of an equivalent diploma; or

2. Associate's degree in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental
technology, landscape architecture/design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, or electronics.

Substitution: a certificate in CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics or electronics may substitute for one year of the experience; or 36 semester college credit hours in mathematics, physical science, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture or landscape design, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics or electronics technology may substitute for experience at the rate of 18 semester credit hours
equaling one year of experience.

Duties Description This position will be filled within the Design Mapping and Automation Bureau in the Office of Design. The incumbent will perform routine technical tasks under the direct supervision of licensed Professional Engineers, licensed Land Surveyors, or higher-level technicians.

Tasks may include but are not limited to:

• Maintain record files, log correspondence into paper and electronic filing systems.

• Prepare written technical materials, contract documents, and reports.

• Perform or assist with engineering calculations, taking measurements, checking computations, proofreading written materials, collecting, and compiling data, and performing inspections of construction projects or portions of projects.

• Utilize basic computer skills (e.g., Outlook email, MS Word & Excel) and assist in making prints, copies, plans, reports, etc.

• Support higher level Professional Engineers or Land Surveyors in the development of plans and written materials including specifications and estimates for all types of projects.

• Perform field work which may include surveys, measurements, and drafting sketches.

• Make precise field measurements by operating modern terrestrial laser scanners, geodetic surveying devices, and global positioning system (GPS) instruments.

• Plot survey results to create detailed base mapping and assist with work zone traffic control plans.

• Assist with the research of records relating to the ownership and location of real property.

• Prepare survey maps for acquiring and managing state interest in real property and/or prepare terrain models and base mapping for the design of capital projects.

• Install settings and maintain field measurement equipment. Take and evaluate periodic readings to ensure instrument calibration.

• Perform calculations and evaluate data through measurements and testing.

• Prepare plot plans and maps of sites and State-owned property, indicating topography, boundaries, buildings, roads, signs, obstacles, and any unique site characteristics, such as flood areas, rock formations, and streams.

• Participate in surveys and inspections to determine the condition of structures, buildings, bridges, canal banks, roads, etc., on State owned or managed property. Prepare reports of findings.

Other duties as assigned, specific program assignments and duties can be discussed further at time of interview.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
