Minimum Qualifications The examinations for this position have been announced and applications to take the exam must have been submitted to the Department of Civil Service by August 31, 2022.
If applying for provisional appointment: In order for you to be considered for a permanent/contingent permanent appointment, you must have applied for and completed the examination for this title, and your score must be high enough to qualify you as one of the top three acceptors on the resulting list. If you are not successful on the examination, or if your score is not high enough to be reachable for appointment, your employment in this title will not be allowed to continue.

Individuals appointed as a Geologist Trainee are required to complete a minimum of one year of successful performance as a Geologist Trainee and pass the National Association of State Boards of Geologist’s Fundamentals of Geology (FG)examination. If you pass the FG by the end of the first year, you may be advanced to the Grade 20 Assistant Geologist title without further examination. If you do not pass the FG by the end of the second year of the traineeship, you will be terminated from your position.

Geologist Trainee: You must have a bachelor's degree or higher in earth science, engineering geology, environmental geology, environmental geosciences, geochemistry, geological engineering, geology, geological science, geophysics, or hydrogeology.
Assistant Geologist: A bachelor's degree or higher in earth science, engineering geology, environmental geology, environmental geosciences, geochemistry, geological engineering, geology, geological science, geophysics, or hydrogeology, AND:
Either
1. Proof of passing the National Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) Fundamentals of Geology (FG) examination, *
Or
2. A professional geologist licensure with current registration.
*You will be required to provide proof of passing the Fundamentals of Geology to the hiring agency prior to appointment.

Duties Description This position is located in the Division of Environmental Remediation, Bureau of Technical Support. Duties include serving as Project Manager (PM) for Petroleum Spill Response and Remediation Projects. This work may involve oversight of responsible parties implementing corrective actions under Department issued Orders on Consent, management of State-funded (PIN Project) Cleanups and working with EPA on Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) projects and programmatic issues.
Responsibilities of this position include interaction with remedial parties and the regulated community, managing all aspects of the response, investigation, remediation and site management phases of the project lifecycle. This will include the review and evaluation of work plans, investigation reports, pilot tests, groundwater models, optimization plans and petitions for closure. Duties will include technical support as requested to ensure conformance with current geological standards, guidance and Department policies.
The duties will also include providing geological services under the direction and oversight of the Section manager or other Professional Geologist. These may include interpretation of groundwater, soil, soil vapor, sediment or rock data or measurements, field geologic observations or surveys, as well as the application of geologic principles during standard remedial investigations or expedited site assessments.
The duties also include providing technical direction, oversight and management for standby contractors and consultants on State funded projects; approval of budgets, preparing and responding to written correspondence; making public presentations; and interacting directly with the public and interested community groups in relation to remedial projects.
Some field work may involve working around heavy machinery such as drill rigs and construction equipment. Respiratory or other personal protection equipment mat be required at times. Compliance with OSHA HAZWOPR requirements, including training and certification will be required. The work will require overnight travel.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overtime may be required.
