Minimum Qualifications Two years of experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled trades worker or completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course.

Duties Description The incumbent will be required to obtain written or faxed quotes for equipment and materials and maintain records of disbursement of equipment and materials. Maintenance Assistants perform a variety of semiskilled maintenance, repair and related activities. The activities, tasks and assignments described below are illustrative of the duties performed by positions at this level: they are not meant to restrict Maintenance Assistants from performing other duties assigned. Incumbents may be assigned to one or more of these areas, depending on the work requirements, seasonal operations, and program needs. These duties may include operating machine tools, including meal and wood lathes, cutting saws, planers and radial drill presses to manufacture metal items such as large bushings and special bolts and performs the less difficult machine operations such as threading bolts, broaching keyways and making wood repair pieces; operates, maintains (services) and repairs Residency equipment such as chain saws, weed trimmers, and small lawn mowers; performs routine replacement and repair of plumbing and steam fitting equipment and installation of new equipment, according to layouts provided by the supervisor, by cutting, fitting and threading pipe; removing existing pipes and fixtures, repairing and adjusting water mixers, thermostats, and other fixtures; locating and unplugging stoppages, repairing domestic steam equipment systems and water lines, overhauling vacuum pumps and insulating steam lines; cutting, welding and brazing a variety of metal materials and equipment manufacturers standard items; performing semiskilled carpentry activities including repairing doors, windows, window sashes, storm windows, stairs, railings, furniture, locks and door hardware; operating shop machinery to make and assemble bookcases, shelves, tables and benches; erecting and moving partitions, building forms for concrete work and, under supervision, assisting in erecting and renovating buildings and structures; operating and maintaining heating and hot water equipment in a small facility by replacing parts such as filters and pumps, cleaning equipment and fireboxes; replacing and adjusting components such as thermostats and checking oil level in storage tanks; performing semiskilled masonry repairs and installation activities such as pointing brick and stone work, patching plaster walls, setting tiles, laying brick and stone, finishing concrete work, replacing fire brick in boilers and operating mixers; repairing, rebuilding and assisting in installing a variety of roof materials and may be called upon to perform cleanup or custodial duties; assisting in painting and decorating work by performing interior and exterior painting and may be called upon to assist in painting DOT vehicles and equipment; performing the routine tasks of the electrical trade including repairing electrical equipment such as overhead door motors, vacuums, laying and repairing electrical cables and wires; installing and maintaining lighting fixtures, outlets, switches and controllers; and operating vehicles that are covered by Class “B” with air brake endorsement and may be called upon to operate equipment that is within the DOT inventory, such as loaders and backhoes.

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations
