Minimum Qualifications To be considered for appointment, candidates must be reachable from the proper Civil Service eligible list or be eligible for reassignment or transfer following Civil Service Law.
If a viable list does not exist, a provisional appointment may be made in accordance with Civil Service Law. Candidates who accept a provisional appointment must take the next competitive examination and be reachable on the resultant eligible list in order to be considered for permanent appointment to the position.
The minimum requirements for taking the Promotional examination are:
You must be a qualified employee of New York State with permanent competitive or non-competitive service (including 55-b/55-c) as:
Engineering Geologist, Engineering Materials Analyst, Environmental Engineering Technician 2, Senior Drafting Technician (all parenthetics), Senior Engineering Technician, or Senior Engineering Technician (Soils).
The minimum requirements for taking the Open Competitive examination are:
Either 1. FOUR years of experience assisting in engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, environmental technology, landscape architecture/design, materials laboratory technology, drafting or surveying, AND graduation from high school or possession of a diploma issued by a recognized educational authority;
Or 2. an associate's degree in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture/design, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics, or electronic technology AND TWO years of experience listed above in number 1.
Or 3. a bachelor's degree in mathematics, physical science, geology, engineering or engineering technology, architecture or architectural technology, construction technology, landscape architecture/design, environmental technology, drafting, forestry, surveying, aeronautics, electronics, or electronics technology.
Duties Description As a Principal Engineering Technician (PET), the candidate will work under a higher-level supervisor.
Duties may include, but are not limited to:
• Collecting, maintaining, and analyzing traffic data in support of the Department’s Continuous Traffic Count Program.
• Reviewing and coordinating construction activities in support of the traffic monitoring continuous count system. Including meeting with EICs, Design, Residency, and contractor personnel.
• Performing field inspections and repairs for continuous and permanent short count sites.
• Working with equipment and supply vendors to purchase and ensure proper operation of traffic and bicycle/pedestrian monitoring equipment.
• Checking reports of subordinates for completeness and accuracy.
• Reviewing data and samples compiled by Traffic Count Contractors and subordinates.
• Reviewing maps, drawings, and data reports.
• Preparing correspondence to designers, planners, and contractors.
• Frequent multiple day trip travel across the state in support of then Continuous Count and Bicycle/Pedestrian Count Programs.
• Supervising staff assigned to the office who are performing activities related to the Continuous Count and Bicycle/Pedestrian Programs.
• Performing other duties, as required.
Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
Additional Comments *Telecommuting: The Department’s current telecommuting agreement is valid through February 15, 2023 and is subject to extension beyond that date.
