Minimum Qualifications There are no minimum qualifications per Civil Service.

Duties Description Under the supervision of the Park Manager 1 and/or higher-level personnel, the incumbent will perform a variety of duties relating to the care and maintenance of plantings, gardens, vegetation, specimen trees, and related grounds maintenance at Allegany State Park
including but not limited to:
• Operate in an independent manner, does planting, transplanting, watering, fertilizing, spraying, pruning, and trimming of valuable, rare, or specialized trees, shrubs, vines, and flowers and identifies and supervises or otherwise handles the removal of invasive species consistent with agency policies and procedures;
• Inspects assigned areas to identify potential safety hazards, needs for skilled maintenance, landscaping requirements, litter control, refuse removal, etc., report findings to supervisor(s) and/or undertakes corrective action; takes soil samples and performs soil analysis; weed landscape beds and assist with mulching
• Selectively prunes plants to correct structural defects, to thin excessive growth within the plant's framework and to remove portions of the plant damaged
by disease, storm, or insects to retain or restore the natural form of the plant;
• Develops management plans in coordination with, and under the oversight of, the Park Manager or designee for outdoor gardens, arboretum, and living collections; maintains display beds and specimen trees through weeding, watering, pruning, deadheading, mulching, edging, raking, and fertilization as appropriate to the species;
• Curates outdoor herbaceous and woody plant collections; identifies plant growth, nutrient, insect, and disease problems, taking the appropriate corrective and remedial action in consultation with supervisor(s); researches and assesses the best horticultural/arboricultural practices for managing the living collections; documents, reports, and catalogs plant-related information;
• Performs appropriate soil preparation and planting of annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees; performs seasonal landscaping work including planting, pruning, clean-up, bulb planting, dividing, and transplanting, and leaf removal;
• Operates and maintains hand and portable power tools and motorized equipment such as, but not limited to, pruning equipment, soil cultivators, rototillers, sod cutters, mowers, sprayers, saws, trimmers, etc.
• Inspects and conducts maintenance and repairs of pathways, signs, markers, benches, etc. directly or in coordination with other appropriate staff;
• Operates light trucks and other motor vehicles as required in the performance of duties;
• May be required to load and unload materials, tools and equipment of varying weights and sizes as needed in the performance of duties assigned;
• Properly maintains equipment and supplies and ensures that they are stored safely and appropriately.

Additional Comments

OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Minimum of 6 months of formal education in arboriculture, horticulture, forestry, or a closely related field, and a minimum of 1 year of technical experience in arboriculture or a closely related field is preferred.
• Must be able to handle the physical demands of the job such as standing, bending, lifting, pulling, and climbing.
• Must be able to and comfortable with working outside in various weather conditions, and inclement weather.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be able to operate equipment such as tractors, UTV’s, mowers, trimmers, towing trailers, etc.
• Must be available to work a variable schedule that may include weekends and holidays.
• Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
• Must be reliable, flexible, and willing to work in a team setting.
• Must be able to work independently and in a team setting.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner.
