Minimum Qualifications Current New York State employee with one year or more of permanent, contingent-permanent, labor, or 55b/c service as a Animal Health Inspector 1 OR Active list candidate on the New York State Department of Civil Service's Animal Health Inspector 1 eligible list# 28-370 with a score of 90 or higher.

Provisional: Current license to practice as a Veterinary Technician from the New York State Education Department AND an associate's degree, plus 18 or more credit hours in specialized courses relating to animal health science, veterinary technology, animal husbandry or animal science.

Preferred Qualifications: 1) Bachelors degree in animal science, veterinary technology, biology, biochemistry, or a related field 2) Clinical or research experience with one or more laboratory animal species including but not limited to rats, mice, rabbits, ferrets, cats, non-human primates, or dogs 3) Animal husbandry experience with laboratory animal species, preferably in a laboratory setting.

Duties Description The Animal Health Inspector 1 will be responsible for frontline regulatory inspections, investigations, and enforcement of 10 NYCRR Subpart 55-1 at institutions conducting scientific tests, experiments or investigations, including educational demonstrations on living animals. Types of facilities being inspected include dedicated laboratory animal and biomedical research facilities located across the state within institutions such as, private and public colleges & universities including but not limited to medical, pharmacy, and dental schools as well as veterinary & veterinary technology schools; Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies; contract research laboratories; and breeders/suppliers of laboratory animals that also conduct research.

Additional Comments The Center’s Laboratory Animal Welfare Program (LAWP) is charged with annually inspecting 122 regulated entities across the state.

Permanent, Competitive or Provisional, full-time. Transfer candidates may be asked for SSN to verify title history and eligibility.

Provisional candidates will be required to take the next Civil Service examination for the Animal Health Inspector 1 and be eligible for immediate appointment from the resulting eligible list to maintain continued employment.

This position requires extensive travel. Appointees must demonstrate the capacity to meet the transportation needs involved in carrying out work responsibilities.
