Minimum Qualifications Legal Assistant 1: Reachable for appointment on current Civil Service eligible list used for this title; or one year of permanent competitive class service as a Legal Assistant 1; or one year of permanent competitive-class service in a title eligible for transfer under section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. Eligible titles include: Program Aide, Office Assistant 3, Administrative Assistant 2. Please note: candidates must also possess an associate’s degree or higher in a paralegal/legal assistance program OR a certificate in a paralegal/legal assistant program where either the degree or certificate was granted from a regionally accredited college or university, or college or university accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) or one approved by the American Bar Association (ABA).
Legal Assistant Trainee 1: Reachable for appointment on current Civil Service eligible list used for this title; or one year of permanent competitive-class service in a title eligible for transfer under section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. Eligible titles include: Assistant Insurance Fund Services Representative, Office Assistant 2, Administrative Assistant 1. Please note: this is a two-year traineeship leading to the journey level title of Legal Assistant 1, SG-14. During the two-year traineeship, trainees are required to successfully complete six courses in paralegal studies and related skills from an accredited college and one or more courses in writing skills.
Duties Description Legal Assistant 1/Trainee 1/2 would be responsible for compiling and organizing documentation, preparing correspondence and subpoenas, preparing and assisting in the preparation of legal documents and forms, tracking payments and logging information, updating databases and spreadsheets, preparing and filing with the courts all associated court papers, arranging service of process, monitoring court cases, ensuring court documents, including judgments, are properly and timely filed, as well as assembling exhibits and briefs.
