Duties Description The Unit is responsible for the classification of approximately 1 million acres of shellfish lands in the Marine District of NYS, determining which areas are safe for the harvest of shellfish, to protect public health of shellfish consumers. The program operates under the requirements of the National Shellfish Sanitation Program and is evaluated annually by FDA for compliance.
Job duties:
• Design and implement water quality studies of growing areas in the marine district; each Biologist is assigned a portion of the 75 growing areas in the marine district for conducting water quality sampling for classification of shellfish lands.
• Conduct shoreline surveys to identify and document actual or potential pollution sources; maintain survey information and update as needed
• Prepare water quality and sanitary survey reports for shellfish growing areas assigned to the Biologist; make recommendations on the classification of shellfish lands for harvest
• Conduct biotoxin monitoring at designated locations which involves the collection of phytoplankton and mussel samples as well as environmental data
• Supervise a team of Fish & Wildlife technicians who conduct water and shellfish sampling using outboard powered boats (14’ to 27’), throughout the year
• Prepare regulatory amendment packages to change the classification of shellfish lands, as appropriate, based on the water quality data and findings of the pollution source surveys
• Participate in meetings with federal, state and local officials and members of the shellfish industry regarding various water quality and shellfish sanitation issues
• Assist other programs with various field sampling for marine resources
• Review permit applications or projects which may have the potential to affect water quality in shellfish harvest areas
• Required Training: Attend the FDA Sanitary Survey Course
• Possible overnight travel to attend Shellfish Sanitation Meetings, subject to approval
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.
