Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications for Provisional Appointment:
Must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and have had one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as an Assistant Land Surveyor 2.
or
Either 1. four years of experience in land surveying that included conducting measurements of space, water, land and structures to determine boundaries, areas, elevations, alignments, volumes, and locations AND performing evaluation and analysis of field data and researching public and private land records;
Or 2. an associate's degree or higher in Cartography, Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Surveying Engineering Technology, Forestry, Forest Technology, Land Surveying, Geography, Geographic Information Science, Geomatics Engineering, Geospatial Science, or Spatial Science AND two years of experience as described in Option 1.
Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC
or
Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis.
or
Transfer Eligible - One year of permanent competitive service at Salary Grade 14 or higher and either: Eligible for transfer under Section 70.4: Must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications below;
or
Eligible for transfer under Section 70.1: Permanent competitive service as an Assistant Land Surveyor 3.
Open competitive minimum qualifications (provided for 70.4 transfer eligible):
Either 1. four years of experience in land surveying that included conducting measurements of space, water, land and structures to determine boundaries, areas, elevations, alignments, volumes, and locations AND performing evaluation and analysis of field data and researching public and private land
records;

Duties Description Process, balance, and transform data derived from Optical and GPS observations to attain acceptable horizontal and vertical control.
Supervise and train field crews in the operation of modern terrestrial, geodetic surveying, geographic positioning system instruments, proper field survey procedures, and work zone safety.
Assist in determining property line and highway boundary locations.
Prepare survey maps for acquiring and managing state interest in real property.
May plan and schedule work assignments for specific projects, and research records relating to the ownership and location of real property.
Assist in keeping of survey records within the department, help maintain the Department's land records.
Maintain survey equipment.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overtime may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.
