Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries, marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.

Preferred: Organization skills, good communication skills, ability to work on a team, comfortable driving in and around an urban environment.

Duties Description The Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 will provide support to wildlife biologists in the Bureau of Wildlife. The technician will conduct wildlife surveys, collect and organize data, and construct and maintain field equipment for various wildlife research projects. The technician will also respond to human-wildlife conflicts and provide technical and educational resources for wildlife conflicts. Additional duties include carcass collection and transport for wildlife disease examination. Duties will vary over time and by season. Other work may include providing support to the NYSDEC hunter education program, issuing nuisance wildlife permits and assisting with other special license matters including assisting with inspections and exam proctoring. This position requires frequent interaction with consultants, local organizations and municipalities, and the public.

This position may require some weekend work and may include schedule changes. Work days may change from week to week and days off may sometimes be split. Daily work hours may change to meet program needs and sometimes include night/overnight work or early morning work.

Additional Comments Preferred qualifications:
-Experience addressing human-wildlife conflicts
-Experience in the field of urban ecology
-Experience with wildlife field techniques
-Knowledge of federal and/or NY State laws and regulations regarding protected wildlife species
-Experience with identification of bird species of the northeastern US
-Knowledge of bird banding processes and/or experience bird banding
-Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
-Proficiency with ArcGIS

Rabies vaccination required (can be provided by NYS).

Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.

This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 11/30/2023. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview. Please submit cover letter with application.
