Reachable on the New York State Civil Service List for Rehabilitation Counselor 1

At least one year of permanent service in a title eligible for 70.1 transfer pursuant to Civil Service Law
OR
Eligible for provisional appointment pending examination. To be eligible for provisional appointment,
candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in a human service field AND two years of post-bachelor’s qualifying experience OR possess a master’s degree in a human service field AND one
year of post-bachelor’s qualifying experience OR possess a master’s degree in rehabilitation
counseling.
Human service field includes disciplines related to the following: addictions studies; child and family
studies; communication disorders; community health; education; gerontology; health administration;
human services; nursing; nutrition; occupational therapy; physical therapy; psychology; recreation
therapy, including art, dance, drama, and music; rehabilitation counseling; social work; and sociology.
Qualifying Experience: professional experience providing vocational, psychosocial, or
rehabilitative/habilitative services in an agency primarily serving individuals diagnosed with
developmental disabilities, mental illness, or addictions. Internship experience does not count if it was
credited toward the qualifying degree.

Duties Description The candidate filling the position of the Rehabilitation Counselor 1 will work under the guidance of the
Director of Operations and Deputy Director of the DDSO to coordinate various rehabilitative, vacation
planning for individuals, recreational program planning in multiple community homes and the state
operated day habilitation center in Brooklyn DDSOO. This position is an important aspect for service
recipient to engage and spend their leisure time according to their own individualized choices.
The incumbent will also collaborate with residential and clinical teams for program planning under
their purview.
Incumbent will be expected to supervise recreation workers, recreation therapists and work with
habilitation specialists in the DDSO for the benefit of effective program planning in community residences, planning of vacations and establish recreation programs involving activities in community
resources.
Coordinate person-centered service reports with recreation staff.
Communicate activities and events with stake holders through various mediums; newsletter,
SharePoint, Outlook, etc.
Liaise with OPWDD Central Office Communications dept to share events information.
Participate in treatment team meetings as needed.
Coordinate with Self Advocacy Group for monthly meeting and seasonal events.
Review and coordinate recreational program plans across the DDSO.
Perform liaison role with recreation staff, treatment teams, business office and administrative staff.
Seek recreational opportunities in the various communities and work collaboratively with other
recreation staff in region 5.
Reviews records to ensure electronic reports are documented. Uses EHR to review and submit
appropriate information to team.
The candidate filling this position is needed to assist the team in furthering community integration with
teams, plan seasonal events reflective of the service recipients' choices, faith, and beliefs
