Duties Description Incumbent administers all phases of the Hunter Education Program and conducts wildlife conflict outreach at a regional level.
For the Hunter Education program: Ensures that supplies and materials are available through the county coordinator system and participates in instructor candidate training courses, refresher sessions and county meetings. Coordinates instructor recruitment and training. Directly supervises the activities of all volunteer instructors. Provides assistance for extension efforts within the region and communicates instructor needs, problems and suggestions to the program administrator. Provides support to the Hunter Education Program administrator and writes and submits required reports. Proactively seeks opportunities for hunter education outreach in the region and regularly attends outreach events. Creates and hosts outreach events for the hunter education program. Assists with the National Archery in the Schools Program as needed
Additional job duties include:
• Answering phone, email, and in-person inquiries for Hunter Education Classes and lost certificate replacement from the public.
• Delivery of supplies to instructors when required.
• Maintaining equipment inventory.
• Registering classes from instructors into database, including email and correspondence with Albany.
• Entering applicant, instructor information into database, and updating as needed.
• Preparation and management of annual refresher meetings, instructor training, (e.g., photocopying, large mailings, apprentice registrations).
• Holding meetings and trainings at various locations across the region (involving evening and weekends)
For wildlife conflict outreach: Creates and hosts wildlife conflict education events, promotes wildlife conflict resolution techniques, conducts wildlife conflict surveys
Other duties may include assisting with other aspects of Bureau of Wildlife work, including but not limited to: wildlife surveys, data collection, nuisance permit issuance, wildlife health specimen collection and monitoring
Must be able to deal effectively with the public and obtain hunter education instructor certification if not already an instructor. If not already possessed, must be willing to obtain NYS hunting and trapping certifications. Must be able to navigate conversations surrounding the intersection of different and vast perspectives surrounding hunting and trapping in New York City and throughout New York State in a manner which is respectful of diverse perspectives and experiences.
Must be willing to work in rough terrain, all weather conditions, and carry field equipment. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule as needed including, early morning, nighttime, and weekend work. Overnight travel may be required. Good communication, organizational, and computer skills are essential. Must possess a valid NYS drivers license and be comfortable driving in an urban environment.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds. Rabies vaccination required (can be provided by NYS).
