Minimum Qualifications Permanent Transfer Candidates: Current NYS DOH employee with permanent status as a Senior Sanitarian, G-18.
Preferred Qualifications: Must have strong interpersonal, problem solving, decision-making and time management skills and the ability to communicate effectively with all internal and external stakeholders. Work well alone and in a team setting. Ability to observe and apply observations to regulatory standards. Good verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to go into all areas of the buildings. Excellent writing and editing skills and be able to effectively interpret laws and regulations governing diagnostic and treatment centers including knowledge of fire/safety and sanitary codes of NYS and localities.
Duties Description This position is one of an inspector/sanitarian in the Hospital and Diagnostic & Treatment Centers (D&TC) program. The duties include surveillance of regulated Healthcare facilities including re-licensure, follow-up, pre-opening, closing, and complaint inspections and Certificate of Need reviews. The incumbent will take the lead on investigating and enforcing the provisions of the Public Health Law and New York Codes, Rules, and Regulations and Federal Codes relating to enviornmental health, maintenance, general sanitation, and fire/safety. These provisions may include other technical standards, including those of the National Fire Protection Association, the National Plumbing Code, FGI, etc. The incumbent will determine the compliance of facilities or assess public health problems in the following areas: structure and space provisions; mechanical and electrical systems; ventilation/air con idtioning /heating; fire safety (structural and operational); housekeeping; maintanence; laundry, infection control; pest control; solid waste disposal; water supply; plumbing; sewage disposal; accident prevention; disaster preparedness; hazardous wastes/biohazard wastes; air pollution; and medical systems. The incumbent will also apply the principles of biological and physical sciences and skills of assessing enviornmental features to maintain, protect, and improve the health and safety of individuals receiving services at healthcare facilities. The incumbent will assist with policy interpretation to staff, providers, and other other governmental agencies. The incumbent will complete written reports, citation writing, and informational memos as part of the inspection process. The incumbent will assist other inspectors as needed. Respond to emergencies such as fires, weather related emergencies, etc. as needed. Additionally, supervision of lower level staff may be required. Other State and Federal work as required.
Additional Comments This position requires significant travel – including overnight travel - throughout New York State to areas that may not be served by public transportation. This position requires proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
