Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have a law degree from an accredited law school, admission to, and be a member in good standing of the NYS Bar and should have four years of experience in the practice of law after their admission to the Bar, with some legal course work or practice experience with immigration law.
The preferred candidate will have more than one year of practice experience with immigration law and have practice experience with government grant administration.
Duties Description The Associate Counsel duties in the Office for New Americans will include but are not limited to the following:
• Provide legal assistance to the Department of State’s Office for New Americans (ONA) on a variety of topics involving immigration law and policy and grants administration.
• Research and writing, document development and review, reviewing related legislation, and staying up to date on changes to immigration law.
• The Associate Attorney will work directly will work directly with ONA’s management and staff to stay updated on program activities and provide advice and assistance to the agency’s executive staff on immigration related matters as needed.
ONA was created in 2012 to welcome immigrants and to help them in achieving their American Dream. ONA works with a statewide network of community-based service providers to assist new Americans in accessing and navigating a variety of free services and in doing so, supports their inclusion as in integral part of New York State’s diverse cultural fabric.
