This is a Management Confidential position that is appointed by the Inspector General. The salary range is $63,266-$78,505 (Grade 18 equivalent).

Duties Description The Offices of the Inspector General (“OIG”) are comprised of three offices, derived from three appointments held by Inspector General Lucy Lang: The Office of the New York State Inspector General (“NYSIG”), as established by Executive Law Article 4-A, which is entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring that New York State government, its employees, and those who work with the State meet the highest standards of honesty, accountability, and efficiency; The Office of the New York State Welfare Inspector General (“OWIG”), as established by section 74 of the Executive Law, which is responsible for maintaining the integrity of New York State’s public assistance programs; and The Office of the New York State Workers’ Compensation Fraud Inspector General (“WCFIG”), as established by section 136 of the Workers’ Compensation Law, which is responsible for investigating violations of the laws and regulations pertaining to the operation of the workers’ compensation system. Additionally, as of June 18, 2021, the duties and responsibilities of the former Office of the Gaming Inspector General were transferred to and encompassed by NYSIG, including the duty to receive and investigate complaints from any source concerning allegations of corruption, fraud, criminal activity, conflicts of interest or abuse in the Gaming Commission.
Job Description
OIG conducts in-depth investigations of alleged criminal wrongdoing, corruption, conflicts of interest, fraud and abuse in New York State agencies and entities which fall under its jurisdiction. To advance this mission, OIG seeks a passionate, dedicated professional to join our communications team as Press Secretary. Primary responsibilities include working with OIG’s Executive Staff to foster public awareness of and engagement with the agency by promoting its work through press releases and events, staff speaking engagements, and responding to press and freedom of information law inquiries.

The Press Secretary is the initial point of contact for all incoming inquiries from reporters, works with appropriate staff to develop and coordinate responses, and serves as the primary drafter of press releases, presentation proposals, and op-eds. The Press Secretary is responsible for pitching newsworthy stories, managing breaking news, preparing daily press clips, and helping to build and maintain press lists and reporter relationships. The Press Secretary will develop briefing documents to prepare the Inspector General and other staff for media interviews and other appearances, and will also be charged with proactively identifying and/or creating such opportunities. Additionally, the Press Secretary will assist with Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) responses, monitor and update OIG’s internal and external websites, and is expected to liaise with communications staff at covered entities, law enforcement partners, and other external contacts.
