Minimum Qualifications Seven years of experience in the administration and management of the architectural, historical, and cultural restoration, renovation, and preservation of buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Bachelor’s degree in historic preservation, architectural history, history, art history, architecture, architectural technology, building science, construction technology, construction management, engineering, engineering technology, landscape architecture may substitute for four years of specialized experience.

Master’s Degree in the above fields may substitute for five years of specialized experience.

Ph.D. in the above fields may substitute for six years of specialized experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidate should possess strong research and writing skills, experience with Section 14.09 NYS Historic Preservation Act, Section 106 Reviews, HABS/HAER Level 1-4 documentation, National Register Nominations, evaluating National Register integrity, guiding submissions through the NYC Landmark Preservation Commission, and skill in interpreting the Secretary of Interior’s Standards.

Duties Description The Capitol Restoration Coordinator directs and organizes the architectural, historic, and cultural repair, restoration, and preservation of the New York State Capitol, as well as associated educational and interpretive activities, under the leadership of the Capitol Architect. The Capitol Restoration Coordinator helps to ensure quality stewardship is maintained for this exceptional property and assists in the long-term preservation of the Capitol through the preservation of historic materials and features. Illustrative duties include:
• Conduct and supervise historical and architectural research.
• Direct and supervise the development and preparation of educational and interpretive programs.
• Assist with defining restoration parameters, conduct relevant research, compile architectural drawings and historic images for proposed Capitol projects.
• Write copy and select images for brochures and interpretive panels on the history of the Capitol or current restoration/rehabilitation projects.
• Provide assistance on historic finishes, appropriate substitute and historic materials, as well as guidance on introducing contemporary design solutions.
• Provide research and advice on compliance with NYS Historic Preservation Act for client agency projects that affect buildings that are listed or eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
• Research and write professional letters, reports, and other documentation in support of projects at the Capitol.
• Perform a full range of supervisory duties.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Some travel is required.

Additional Comments This position will be temporary status only while shadowing under the current Capitol Restoration Coordinator to learn the role and knowledge transfer. Once the current Capitol Restoration Coordinator leaves the position will transition into permanent status, if successful.
