Minimum Qualifications
Non-Competitive: Two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of appropriate technical courses at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services. Applicants must submit evidence of qualifications.
*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
Applicants must possess a valid New York State driver's license and have the ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Duties Description This semi-skilled position shall be assigned to the Facilities' Mechanical Trades Department. The Maintenance Assistant will perform semiskilled activities in the installation, maintenance, alteration, and repair of HVAC equipment and systems, such as boilers, chillers, exhaust systems, and auxiliary support equipment (e.g., piping, water treatment systems, HVAC filters, thermostats, and pneumatic controls). Under the supervision of a journey-level tradesperson, the position will also assist skilled mechanical trades in complex repair and installation tasks.
The Maintenance Assistant position will also perform routine tasks of the electrical trade, including repair of electrical equipment such as overhead door motors, vacuum cleaners, floor machines, electric ranges, and other appliances; replacing brushes on large electric motors; laying and repairing electrical cables and wires; installing and maintaining lighting fixtures, outlets, and switches; and adjusting points and contacts on electrical equipment.
The Maintenance Assistant will use the tools of the mechanical trades, including the standard hand tools, portable power tools, multi-meters and shop equipment.
Troubleshoot assigned work orders related to HVAC, plumbing, fire suppression, and mechanical equipment in dormitories and academic buildings.
Install, maintain, and repair boilers, hot water heating systems, control devices, air handlers, and appliances.
Inspect mechanical equipment, perform preventative maintenance, prepare and maintain inspection reports, read utility meters, and estimate repairs.
Coordinate with HVAC, plumbing and mechanical contractors on critical maintenance projects.
