Transfer Eligible - One year of permanent competitive service at salary grade 13 or higher and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1: Permanent competitive service as a Fish & Wildlife Technician 2.
Preferred Qualifications include demonstrated proficiency and experience handling nuisance wildlife complaints and permitting and managing Wildlife Management Areas.
Duties Description This position will serve as the principal technician for the region regarding nuisance wildlife, particularly related to black bear and white-tailed deer conflicts. Duties will include coordinating and supervising response to complaints, providing technical advice, reviewing and approving permits, managing databases, and assisting with chemical immobilization. This technician will oversee the management of Wildlife Management Areas in 4 counties, comprising approximately 12,000 acres. Duties will include coordination with the Division of Operations, preparing annual work plans, administering service contracts, coordinating Volunteer Stewardship Agreements, and reviewing Temporary Revocable Permits. This technician will also be the principal technician for research related activities pertaining to furbearers and upland game birds. Duties will include planning, coordinating, and implementing field activities, managing/reviewing data, and collaborating with the Wildlife Health Unit for disease investigation. Additional duties to support the regional wildlife program will be required, including but not limited to, waterfowl surveys and banding, checking hunter-harvested deer, and public outreach.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 40 pounds. Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.

For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
