Operating Needs:
Ability to lift 50lbs of animal feed and/or supplies. May be required to work on weekends and holidays on a rotating basis.
Duties Description Maintains animal laboratory, cleans and washes facilities, cages, and other equipment, and performs other housekeeping duties as scheduled and directed to ensure that facilities are clean and adequately supplied; Follows weekly schedule as outlined by manager; Responsible for the daily care of various species of laboratory animals: mice, rats, or other species of laboratory animals, as necessary; up to 150 cages; cleaning, feeding and watering of animals as assigned; makes and records daily inspections for animal care, feeding and cleanliness; complies with SOP’s supporting husbandry, gowning, sanitation, etc.; continually monitors animals' conditions and behaviors to detect symptoms of disease and changes in condition and reports such findings to the appropriate supervisory or veterinary personnel; observation and reporting of deviations in the environment which would affect animal health or research projects i.e., high temperature or humidity; treats animals as prescribed in guidelines to maintain the general health of laboratory animals; attends to the physical needs of animals both in regular housing and in controlled environment chambers in order to ensure that animals are maintained in health and comfort within the constraints of experimental procedures; performs a variety of administrative activities such as maintaining records and supplies inventories, placing orders and receiving shipments; and assists in veterinary care activities; maintains inventories and provides adequate time / notice for reordering; receives all materials to support operations (feed, bedding, PPE, etc.); utilize Personal Computer for time records, internal emails, training, etc. Abide by UA policy for PC utility; regular work schedule is 37.5 hours per week; however, the incumbent may be required to work on weekends and holidays on a rotating basis. This position is over time eligible; the Caretaker position is physically demanding. Caretakers routinely spend 90% of their time on their feet performing a mix of routine duties: facility sanitation (sweeping and mopping), dumping dirty cages, emptying, and refilling water bottles, utilizing washers, cage changes, receiving and restocking supplies, etc. To perform these duties successfully, Caretakers need to lift caging, cases of water, feed bags, bedding and other support items. The materials are bulky and are as heavy as 50 pounds
