Duties Description Under the direction of the Environmental Stewardship Biologist, or designee, the Hemlock Technician will work as part of the Allegany Region’s stewardship team supporting the efforts to survey for the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid. The team works to prioritize hemlock stands throughout the park. This position will include both office and field work and necessitates the ability to deal with external environmental conditions. Work conditions include uneven terrain, cold, rain, snow, and frequent exposure to thorns and biting insects (including ticks). Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Complete hemlock stand assessments, setting priorities to help manage the invasive species. Monitor hemlock stands post-treatment.
• Conduct surveys for hemlock woolly adelgid presence and survival.
• Responsible for the oversight of data and maps.
• Follow instructions, including written direction, accurately and efficiently.
• Communicate effectively with other staff and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner.
• Apply a team-oriented approach to solving environmental challenges.
• Utilize excellent organizational skills in a field setting and office.
Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must be proficient in Microsoft applications such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.
• Must have a strong interest in, and commitment to environmental stewardship.
• Must have the ability to lift heavy loads, walk long distances and work in a variety of weather.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
• Prior education or experience in environmental management or similar field.
• Experience in backcountry orienteering and the Leave No Trace program.
• Coursework or prior job experience related to forestry, environmental studies, ecology, natural resources management, or a relevant discipline, such as conservation biology, etc.
• Familiarity with invasive insects and their impacts, and tree identification
• Experience with GPS/GIS mapping and data processing, preferably using tools such as ArcGIS, ArcGIS online, Survey 123, and FieldMaps.
• Experience conducting forest stand assessments, habitat assessments, vegetation surveys, or similar assessments of natural communities and ecological monitoring.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
This is a temporary position within the Division of Environmental Stewardship and Planning – Allegany Region. As such, acceptance of this position could result in end-of-season termination of employment as the incumbent must be subject to the same terms of a new seasonal employee. The position and duration will be dependent upon funding availability.
