Minimum Qualifications Note: All candidates must currently have full license privileges to drive an automobile and must have had full continuous license privileges to drive an automobile for the three-year period immediately preceding the date of your appointment and continuously thereafter. Evidence of reckless driving, multiple moving violations, a disregard for New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, and/or drug or alcohol related offenses, etc. may bar you from appointment. Prior to appointment, you may be required to demonstrate acceptable driving ability. Loss of your driving license will result in suspension or termination of your employment. In addition, your driving record is subject to review at any time. Some positions require that you be assigned a state vehicle which you will be required to use to perform the duties of the position. You must possess a driver’s license valid in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously thereafter.
In addition, to be eligible for appointment, candidates must meet one of following conditions as detailed below:
NY HELPS*:
To be eligible for NY HELPS appointment, candidates must have:
Graduated from high school or have earned a high school equivalency diploma AND you must have:
Either
1: One year of experience that involved extensive face-to-face interaction with the general public** while providing customer service.
OR
2: 30 semester credit hours of college-level study AND six months of extensive face-to-face interaction with the general public** while providing customer service.
Transfer: One year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service allocated to a G-12 or higher eligible for transfer and deemed administrative under Section 52.6 of the Civil Service Law; OR in a title approved for transfer under Section 70.1 of Civil Service Law. The transfer cannot be a second consecutive transfer resulting in an advancement of more than two salary grades. Reinstatement: If you previously served in this title or in a title otherwise transferable to this title, you may be reinstated pursuant to Civil Service Law. If you left state service less than one year ago, the reinstatement request from a state agency will usually be approved by the Department of Civil Service. If you left state service more than one year ago, the reinstatement must also be approved by the Civil Service Commission.

This position is eligible for 55b/c designation and candidates with 55b/c eligibility are encouraged to apply. Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications and a current 55b/c eligibility letter. For 55b/c consideration, candidates must satisfy at least one of the Open Competitive qualifications listed.

*This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means NO EXAMINATION IS REQUIRED, but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, WITHOUT HAVING TO TAKE A CIVIL SERVICE TEST. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

Duties Description Under the general direction of an Automotive Facilities Inspector: You will be assigned to conduct field inspections of DMV regulated businesses and to prepare written reports of your findings. You may be assigned to conduct field investigations of DMV regulated businesses that are required to register Mopeds and or ATVs at the time of sale, and to prepare written reports of your findings. You may also be assigned to investigate plate and temporary registration issuance by these entities and may be required to testify at Department of Motor Vehicles hearings. You would routinely work with DMV-specific computer software programs and may be required to analyze data from those programs as part of your inspections/investigations.
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Conducts original inspections of DMV regulated businesses to ensure compliance with the Vehicle and Traffic Law, and Commissioner’s Rules and Regulations.
• Conducts periodic field inspections of records maintained by DMV regulated businesses to ensure compliance with the Vehicle and Traffic Law, and Commissioner’s Rules and Regulations.
• Submits reports of findings regarding inspections along with recommendations for review.
• Gathers, labels, and prepares documentary evidence and data for DMV hearings.
• Prepares narrative case reports of findings and makes appropriate recommendations regarding actions to be taken.
• Testifies at departmental hearings or in court as an expert witness.
• Assists in compiling reports, performs office and record-keeping duties, and performs other administrative duties as assigned.
Additional Comments PLEASE NOTE: Each Vehicle Safety office covers multiple surrounding counties. Latham Vehicle Safety covers: Albany, Clinton, Columbia, Dutchess, Essex, Fulton, Greene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Ulster, Warren, and Washington counties.
