Duties Description Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Commissioner of the Investigations Unit, the Assistant Commissioner will serve as the Regional Director of the Division of Human Rights Long Island Region and be responsible for overseeing the work and operations of the Regional Offices located in Hempstead and Hauppauge. Duties include but are not limited to:

• Oversee all human rights investigations within the assigned region, ensuring thorough, timely, and effective case management.
• Implement departmental policies and guidelines at the regional level.
• Monitor day-to-day activities to ensure adherence to Division of Human Rights standards and protocols.
• Supervise investigators and support staff within the region, providing guidance on complex cases and ensuring professional standards are met.
• Review and approve investigation plans, ensuring cases are assigned, managed, and resolved with attention to detail, sensitivity, and impartiality.
• Assist with high-profile or complex investigations as needed, providing direct support to investigators.
• Build relationships with local stakeholders, including community organizations, advocacy groups, law enforcement, and government entities.
• Represent the department in community meetings, forums, and public events to educate the public about human rights and the department’s role.
• Serve as the primary regional contact for inquiries and complaints from the public and community partners.
• Prepare reports and summaries on regional activities, including case metrics, outcomes, and any significant developments for submission to the Assistant Deputy Commissioner.
• Use data insights to suggest improvements to policies, processes, or resource allocation within the region.
• Ensure regional investigations comply with departmental, state, and federal human rights laws and guidelines.
• Collaborate with senior leadership to roll out new policies and procedures within the region.
• Identify and manage potential risks related to investigations or community relations within the region.

Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree and seven years of relevant experience. *

*Substitutions: four years of relevant experience or associate’s degree and two years of relevant experience may substitute for bachelor’s degree; J.D. or master’s degree may substitute for one year of relevant experience; Ph.D. may substitute for two years of relevant experience.

This position is eligible for the downstate location pay of $3400
