Duties Description • Direct highly skilled craftsmanship peculiar to restoration work which may span across varied trades such as the fabrication of special hardware and duplication of original features.
• Supervise and direct performance of staff in the metal fabrication shop on all work encompassing historic and landmark preservations or repairs.
• Work closely with the Capitol architects and engineers in both a hands on and/or advisory capacity to maintain and preserve historic integrity in repairs and modifications to the NYS Capitol and other executive buildings and spaces.
• Monitor historic sites to identify and prevent structural deterioration and repairs, interior and exterior components, architecture, facade, and surrounding perimeter without adversely affecting their significance.
• Research history of historic buildings, components, and techniques.
• Prepare labor and material cost estimates for each project undertaken by the restoration crew for budget preparation purposes.
• Train the restoration crew in appropriate historic preservation techniques and provide training related to health and safety.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Operational Needs:
• Proficiency in the utilization of specialized equipment as a highly skilled craftsman to fabricate or completely replicate historic building components for preservation. This equipment includes the following:
• Specialty casting and spin casting equipment
• Metal fabrication including benders, shapers, welding, finishing and specialty coating
• Plaster and masonry molds
• Specialty lathes, taps, and dies for hardware fabrication
• Plastic fabrication and repair
• Powder coating equipment
• CNC Waterjet technology
• Horizontal and vertical milling machines and metal lathes
• Welding operations including MIG, TIG, stick, gas and thermal types
• Possession of a valid NYS Driver’s License
• Successful completion of Asbestos Inspector and Supervisor Certification Course (within 90 days of appointment).
• Successful completion of forklift training and trainer certification process.
• Ability to work overtime as required.
Minimum Qualifications Six years of journey-level skilled trades experience involving historic construction techniques and modern methods of stabilizing and preserving old building fabric and materials. Candidates must possess journey-level skill in at least one or more trades applicable to the repair of historic building fabric and materials. Candidates must be competent in differentiating between contemporary and period fabrication/construction and in using period and contemporary tools/ methods to protect period work.
