Duties Description NYSDOT is a leading-edge team of motivated, empowered, and respected professionals whose customers value our high-quality engineering and technical services and products. Each NYSDOT employee plays an important part in fulfilling the Department’s mission and goals, as we are one DOT working cohesively to ensure the state has a safe, efficient, balanced and environmentally sound transportation system.

This position will report directly to professional level staff within the Regional Construction Office as an assistant to the Regional Public Information Officer (PIO). This position will involve working outdoors during the summer construction season in and around NYSDOT Highway and Bridge construction projects to fulfill the following duties:

• Interacting with and maintaining a dependable line of correspondence with field engineers and staff on behalf of the PIO on all projects within the six-county region.

• Develop media pertaining to individual construction project activities, events and milestones for use on official NYSDOT social media channels as well as internal/project specific use.

• Attending and assisting the PIO with various media and public events

Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Minimum Qualifications Must have completed at least 12 credit hours of college study and be currently enrolled in an accredited degree program.

Additional Comments While fulfilling the prescribed duties students would gain experience with the following:

• Exercises in writing for press releases & travel advisories on behalf of a public agency.

• Photographing highway and bridge construction work site activities ensuring specific content requests are fulfilled.

• Storytelling NYSDOT construction project activities with photos, video and limited characters.

• Interacting with NYSDOT and contractor employees at multiple levels and encouraging participation and engagement. Including conducting informal interviews of internal staff for newsletter and articles for internal media
• Organizing tasks while meeting spontaneous media request deadlines.

• Shadowing the PIO during media and public events while they act as an official representative of a public agency.

• Being present for internal meetings and discussions concerning engineering and construction topics.

• A fast-paced, active construction administration and engineering office environment.

• Use of official branding.

• General construction safety.
