BASIC FUNCTION:
Empire State Development (ESD) is seeking an inaugural VP for Cultural Change and Diversity to manage Empire State Development’s efforts to improve its culture and encourage a diverse and inclusive workplace. The VP will help design programs and initiatives to help cultivate a workplace that incorporates the unique perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences of ESD staff.
The VP will lead efforts with ESD’s Leadership and the Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Action Committee to implement ESD’s DEI Strategic Plan* and improve workplace culture. The incumbent will work closely with the Human Resources and Legal teams to prioritize equity, diversity, and inclusion within agency policies, procedures, and environment.
WORK PERFORMED:
? Provide expertise and support to advance DEI principles in agency policies and procedures with both an internal and external focus.
? Communicate internally and externally the importance of diversity and inclusion to the mission of ESD.
? Manage implementation of ESD’s DEI Strategic Plan with a focus on identifying strategies and influencing policies and procedures to enhance workplace culture and advance equity and inclusiveness.
? Lead the implementation of the strategic outcomes identified in ESD’s Strategic Plan.
? Oversee efforts to improve workplace culture and diversity efforts, including but not limited to: employee resources/affinity groups, departmental liaisons, DEI trainings, mentorship programs.
? Collaborate with Human Resources to identify professional development training opportunities to enhance workplace culture and DEI efforts.
? Provide recommendations to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the recruitment process.
? Serve as liaison to intergovernmental committees pertaining to DEI work.
? Manage agency compliance with statewide diversity, equity, and inclusion reporting set by state policy and related initiatives.
? Responsible for monitoring changes to NYS guidelines and/or statewide initiatives as they relate to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
? Provide Human Resources and Legal Department with relevant DEI related updates, are consistent with federal, state, city regulations as well as associated Executive Orders. Responsible for monitoring changes to NYS guidelines and/or sate initiatives as they relate to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
? Develop and design appropriate efforts to track and build the evidence base for DEI strategies.
? Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Education:
Bachelor’s degree in fields such as human resources, cultural studies, social services, organizational development or related fields. Substitutions: A master’s degree in a human services or related field may be substituted for 2 years work experience. Candidates with an associate degree and 10 years relevant work experience will be considered.
Experience:
Seven years of progressively responsible experience in oversight and policy development for cultural change involving staff interaction. Efforts towards ensuring a diverse recruitment process should be highlighted. Experience working within non-profit or government structures to effectuate cultural change or experience in DEI related work is preferred.
Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
? Ability to build strong working relationships across all levels of the organization and work effectively with stakeholders, senior leadership teams, and other leadership across various types of organizations.
? Knowledge of principles, methods and tools of diversity, equity, and inclusion work.
? Knowledge and experience of organizational change theories and practices.
