Duties Description The incumbent will perform clinical testing on samples received by the Mycobacteriology laboratory collected from NYS patients for detection of Mycobacterium species, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories. The incumbent will contribute to oversight of quality assurance, inventory management and supervise staff performing clinical testing.

Minimum Qualifications Reassignment: Current NYS Department of Health employee with permanent or contingent permanent competitive status as Laboratory Specialist 2 Biology.

*Provisional/Non-Competitive Promotion: Current NYS Department of Health employee with one year or more of permanent or contingent-permanent, competitive service as a Laboratory Specialist 1.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in clinical testing and highly pathogenic bacteria using culture and molecular methods in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories. Experience with data analysis, quality assurance, instrumentation, verification, inventory management and supervision of staff.

Additional Comments This position will require the incumbent meet all Federal requirements for staff who perform clinical testing, including the educational requirements. Dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may be required. Permanent, competitive, fulltime. Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate will be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment. Work hours may be variable. Some travel may be required.

*For Provisional appointment, selected candidates will be required to take and pass an appropriate Civil Service examination after appointment and be immediately reachable from the resulting eligible list.

If three or fewer NYS Department of Health promotional candidates respond to this notice, the agency may, at its discretion, nominate a qualified employee for non-competitive promotion under the provisions of Section 52.7 of the Civil Service Law. Employee must have one year or more of permanent or contingent-permanent, competitive service as a Laboratory Specialist 1. If certified by Civil Service, mandatory reemployment list candidates must be considered first for appointment to this title.

This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.
