Duties Description PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Include, but not limited to: This position is responsible for providing direction and guidance to Safety & Security Officer 1’s and Safety & Security Officer Trainees. This includes training in proper procedures, scheduling of duties / assignments and directly supervising and instructing in the handling of major incidents. In addition, this position is a working supervisor responsible for all the activities of the Safety and Security position such as:

All duties of Safety and Security Officer I and:
• Schedules and assigns officers to specific shifts, assignments and inspection duties by region.
• Assists the Chief Safety Officer(s) in performance appraisal of subordinate Safety Officers.
• Reviews subordinate officers’ reports of activities and incidents for accuracy, completeness, and propriety of format.
• May compile narrative and tabular summary reports of subordinate officers’ activities and significant incidents handled by the Safety/Security force in order to inform appropriate supervision of the force’s workload and significant problems.
• Ability to act independently.
• Ability to work effectively in conjunction with multiple intra-agency divisions and external entities.
• Ability to accurately observe and document conditions relating to welfare and security.
• May testify in court.
• May need to coordinate and conduct searches to locate missing individuals.
• Assist responding emergency personnel to and on scene as needed.
• Question suspicious persons.
• Responds to, investigates and prepares detailed written reports at the scenes of fires, accidents, and other incidents.
• Summons medical assistance and applies first aid as the situation indicates/requires.
• Manages and conducts the quarterly reviews of community sites as well as campus locations.
• Instruct employees and individuals about emergency fire and safety practices and procedures.
• Security patrols, on foot or by vehicle, in order to detect evidence of irregularities and deter criminal activity.
• Inspect buildings to ensure that all areas are appropriately locked, secured and free of hazardous conditions.
• Maintain communication by radio, P.A., or telephone for routine and emergency needs.
• Operate emergency vehicles.
• May direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
• May operate security cameras, computers, and related electronic security equipment.
• Enforces state, municipal and institution laws, rules and regulations.
• Search for and eliminate contraband.
• May occasionally arrest suspects and violators in order to protect persons and property.
• Other Administrative duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Must be in title or on the Civil Service eligible list for this location or be eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 or 52.6 in a designated title determined by the New York State Department of Civil Service.

• Must have a driver’s license valid in New York State. A conditional license is not acceptable.
• Ability to meet and maintain a clear criminal background.
• Ability to meet and maintain physical standards.
NOTE:
Due to the peace officer status of incumbents, re-fingerprinting, including payment of all applicable fees, is required even for an existing employee who may already have “search and retain” status with the Division of Criminal Justice Services.
