The Office of the New York State Attorney General (OAG) is seeking attorneys with experience in information technology and consumer protection law for its Bureau of Internet and Technology (BIT) in New York City. BIT is responsible for the enforcement of New York’s privacy, data security, and consumer protection laws in the online and tech environment, as well as for enforcement of New York’s data breach notification laws. In recent years, BIT has investigated a wide range of issues affecting technology, including harm to young people from social media platforms, online privacy, data breaches, false online endorsements, gambling, speculative tickets, and internet fraud. Recent litigations have included a suit against TikTok for misleading the public about the safety of its platform and harming young people’s mental health, and Allstate/NatGen for data breaches.

The OAG is committed to protecting New Yorkers by robustly enforcing state and federal consumer protections and prohibitions on corporate abuse. The selected attorneys will advance economic justice in New York state by directly contributing to BIT’s critical and ongoing enforcement work. Specifically, BIT attorneys are responsible for case investigation and development, settlement negotiation, and litigating affirmative cases on behalf of OAG, as well as consumer outreach and drafting legislation.

Minimum Qualifications Applicants must have a minimum of five (5) years of litigation experience, strong writing skills, an interest in technology and related legal issues, and a commitment to public service. An understanding of and/or experience in technology and related legal issues, privacy, and data security is preferred.

Applicants must reside in (or intend to soon become a resident of) New York state and be admitted to practice law in New York state. In addition, the Public Officers Law requires that OAG attorneys be citizens of the United States. A two (2) year commitment upon being hired is a condition of employment.
