Duties Description The Language Access Coordinator (LAC) reports directly to the Chief Diversity Officer (CDO), and under their guidance and direction will perform the following, as well as other duties as assigned by the CDO:
•Serve as Language Access Coordinator for the Agency and assist regions and divisions with their request for translation and interpretation services. Assess opportunities to be more proactive and inclusive in the Agency’s language offerings.
•Work with the NYS Office of Language Access to ensure Agency compliance with the Language Access Law and attend quarterly meetings to discuss compliance and other relevant issues.
•Assist with investigating discrimination complaints pertaining to language access.
•Update the Agency’s Language Access Plan every 2 years.
•Procure translation services to translate vital documents related to DEC’s public services and programs into the top 12 languages spoken by New Yorkers with limited English proficiency. As needed, procure translation services for vital documents for up to four more languages based on criteria detailed in the language access law.
•Procure translation services, including American Sign Language (ASL), for individuals participating in programs or receiving services from the Agency.
•With the CDO, manage DEC’s language access budget and language line contract.
•Serve as the program’s webpage content creator.
•Maintain and update DEC’s language access webpage and notify the public of available language access services.
•Coordinate the implementation of diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity activities.
•Research, plan, and deliver programming and training on Language Access and other initiatives as assigned by the CDO.
•Represent the agency at public facing recruitment/tabling opportunities.
•Assist with coordination of internal and external cultural awareness programming.
Minimum Qualifications Non-competitive:
six years of experience* in equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion, or human rights.
*Qualifying experience includes working with organizations concerned with equal
opportunity, diversity and inclusion, civil rights, minority business development, or similar programs; or in recruiting, training, and upgrading the educational and job qualifications of protected class members.
Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Travel may be required.
Overnight travel may be required.
Telecommuting may be available, will be discussed at interview.

For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
