Duties Description Standard Duties:
As an Associate Industrial Hygienist within the Division of Safety & Health, the incumbent will handle complex health inspections and consultations at work sites to determine compliance with applicable state/federal standards and to identify health violations/hazards, particularly those associated with exposure to toxic or explosive chemicals and substances in the form of dust, fibers (including asbestos), fumes, mists, vapors, gases, metals and pathogenic organisms. The incumbent will also identify hazards such as noise and vibrations, light of various types, and other physical energies including electromagnetic emissions. Based upon the results of the field testing and/or laboratory analyses taken from on-site inspections, you may confer with management and employee representatives and/or take appropriate enforcement or consultation action. May be responsible for directing, supervising, and reviewing the technical activities of hygiene staff engaged in inspections and/or consultations. May conduct training for staff or public/private sector employers and employees. Will be expected to use a computer in performance of these duties.
Minimum Qualifications This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide program (NY HELPS). For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, if they meet the below NY HELPS minimum qualifications.
NY HELPS Non-Competitive Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree* in physical, biological, or engineering science and three years of industrial hygiene experience.

Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. It is expected that employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status in the future, without having to compete in an examination. REASSIGNMENT QUALIFICATIONS:
Current Department of Labor employees only, with at least one year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service as an Associate Industrial Hygienist; if you have less than one year, you must be reachable on the current Associate Industrial Hygienist eligible list for this location, if one exists.
52.7 NON-COMPETITIVE PROMOTION (NCP) QUALIFICATIONS:
To be eligible for NCP, candidates must be in the Department of Labor promotion field and have one year or more of permanent, contingent-permanent or 55 b/c service as a (DIRECT LINE TITLE). If 3 or fewer qualified Department of Labor Senior Industrial Hygienists respond to this posting, Civil Service may approve the permanent appointment of one of the qualified Senior Industrial Hygienists without further examination.
Note: Non-competitive refers to not competing in an examination; the appointment will be competitive.
Additional Comments A medical examination will be required prior to appointment, and you are responsible for payment of the clinical laboratory test fee. Appointees to this position may be required to undergo periodic medical examinations to reassess their ability to perform the essential duties of the position.
This position may require a fingerprint background check prior to appointment.
Position specific job duties may include occasional altered work schedule or job assignments which require availability and willingness to work occasional evenings and/or out-stationed assignments.
Candidates with no previous state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range listed above.
Additional location pay is available for the following counties: Bronx, Kings, Nassau, NYC-Manhattan, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, and Putnam.

As this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position.
