Salary RangeFrom $115283 to $145682 Annually
Duties Description Reporting directly to Deputy General Counsel in the Office of General Counsel of the New York State Division of Human Rights, the Associate Counsel’s duties include, but are not limited to:
• Provides legal expertise and counsel in relevant state and federal law and corresponding caselaw;
• Draft guidance and legal opinions for use by the Agency and the public;
• Assist in the preparation of Recommended Orders and/or in devising alternatives to such recommendations of such orders at the direction of the Commissioner;
• Advise on legislative & regulatory issues, providing consultation on and drafting agency legislation and regulations.
• Makes policy recommendations to strengthen the work of the Division and the reach of the Human Rights Law;
• Supervises attorneys and other staff within the Office;
• Reviews written submissions to ensure legal and factual accuracy and uniformity;
• Represents the agency in complex legal proceedings, administrative hearings, internal investigations, and settlement negotiations;
• Reviews settlement agreements before issuance of Final Orders;
• Facilitates CLE programs for Legal staff and distribution of legal precedents which impact or relate to prosecution of cases;
• Reviews and analyzes records of hearings/trials and of media reporting on issues involving possible abuses of Human Rights Law;
• Provides counsel and assistance with personnel matters, discovery holds, Freedom of Information Law requests, records retention and archiving, and other counsel matters; and
• Performs additional duties associated with the Office of General Counsel.
Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have been admitted to the New York State Bar and must have had four (4) years of experience in the practice of law subsequent to admission to the Bar.
