Duties Description Under the direction of higher-level Park Managers and Park Supervisors, the Trades Generalist will perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, installation, and construction tasks in carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work. This position will aid in the rehabilitation, construction, and repair of state park buildings, structures, and infrastructure using the standard tools of the trade. Duties include, but are not limited to:
• Will work independently to plan and lay out projects, interpret and understand plans, supervise and train others as needed for specified projects. Must also troubleshoot problems and make necessary repairs to complete assigned tasks and ensure that instructions have been followed, and the quality of work is satisfactory.
• Performs basic servicing of motor equipment, including troubleshooting, checking fluids, changing fluids, parts, etc.
• Perform tasks that require a basic working knowledge of methods, materials, hand tools, portable power tools, and shop equipment used in multiple trades, including carpentry, plumbing, and electrical equipment maintenance.
• Diagnose and repair broken pumps, pipes and fixtures, clearing blockages, installing new components, and expanding or modifying existing systems.
• Visually inspect fixtures and equipment, and use appropriate test equipment to determine the cause and location of the problem and make repairs or adjustments as needed.
• Maintains adequate levels of supplies, tools, and equipment to accomplish tasks; makes necessary purchases following all Agency guidelines.
• Assist in directing facility maintenance and supervising lower-level staff in the absence of the maintenance supervisor and facility managers.
• Assists with maintenance of roads, paths, and trails, and other areas of site operations as directed, which may include emergencies as well.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications Non-competitive: four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson, which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.

If verifiable, we will accept and prorate part-time and volunteer experience.

Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEED:
• Must possess and maintain a valid Class D driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
• Must have the ability to understand and carry out written and/or oral instructions including the ability to read and interpret blueprints and the ability to issue oral and written instructions to staff.
• Perform medium to heavy manual labor, including lifting, bending, climbing, and standing for extended periods, which also requires working outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Must be physically able to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
